Distribuzione e habitat

Questi pesci sono mwdgendemiche delle acque dolci dell'mwdwAmerica settentrionale, principalmente nella parte orientale e nei corsi d'acqua tributari dell'mweaOceano Atlantico e del mweqGolfo del Messico. La mwegspecie mwewP. promelas è stata mwfaintrodotta anche in mwfqEuropa dove si è mwfgnaturalizzatacite-ref-fishbase-1-0[1]. Vivono in acque ferme o poco mosse di lanche, canali, stagni e laghi, evitando le acque turbolente dei torrenti e dei fiumi.
